EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Educational Program for Young People
The Garden State Philharmonic’s Music for Young People is a comprehensive cooperative music education outreach program that transports the sounds of music into the schools of over 3500 public and private students through hands-on classroom demonstrations by Maestro Anthony LaGruth, live chamber ensemble assemblies, and Young People’s Concerts by the concert orchestra. Through these classroom visits and musical assemblies, young people learn about orchestral music, instruments, science of sound, musical excerpts from the concert, appropriate concert behavior, and how to get involved in music. Auxiliary concert activities include an Instrument Petting Zoo by veteran Youth Orchestra members, a Student Artwork Gallery compiled by art teachers, and a School Chorus performance as part of the concert.
Originally established in the Toms River Regional Schools, the supplemental- in-school program and the Young People’s Concert receive generous fiscal and volunteer support from the OceanFirst Foundation, The Toms River Regional Schools, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and the local community. The GSP plans to expand this program to the Barnegat, Island Heights, Lakewood, Jackson, and Stafford Township School Districts in the coming years.
