    Classical Constructions
    Saturday, April 26, 8pm
    Strand Theater – Lakewood
Anthony LaGruth, conductor – Elena Baksht, piano

Beethoven and Mendelssohn define classical music, and Russian pianist Elena Baksht guides us through Beethoven’s 4th piano concerto. American eccentric Charles Ives sought innovative ways to infuse classical music with the energy of American society around him. Kile Smith’s music has been praised for its emotional power, direct appeal, and strong voice, and John Biggs pays homage to “March King” John Phillip Sousa. Put them together and you get a concert of classical constructions from across two centuries.

    The Dvorak Effect
    Saturday, May 10, 8pm
    Strand Theater – Lakewood
    Anthony LaGruth, conductor

Dvorak helped to establish the first conservatory in the U.S., and he called for American composers to create their own voice rather than to imitate their European counterparts. He suggested the use of spirituals and Indian melodies as a basis for this sound. Parker, Gilbert, and Chadwick are among those who heeded Dvorak’s words, creating the Second New England School of American Composers. Their works have a distinct sound and had a great influence on generations of composers.
